Parks Australia supports the Director of National Parks, the federal park agency, in conserving Australia's biodiversity and cultural heritage. Parks Australia manages the Commonwealth's terrestrial and marine protected areas, including six national parks (three jointly managed with their traditional owners), three botanic gardens and one of the largest networks of marine reserves in the world.
The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is part of the Office of Environment and Heritage (OEH) in the Department of Premier and Cabinet.
NPWS was established in 1967 to administer a fledgeling system of national parks. Today, the agency manages more than 850 protected areas in NSW, covering nearly 8 million hectares and representing around 8 percent of the land area of the State. This includes national parks, nature reserves, World Heritage areas, rainforests, beaches, alpine areas and sites of great cultural and historic significance and some of our most highly valued recreation and tourism sites.
