The IUCN World Parks Congress 2014 will begin with an official opening ceremony combining formality with world-class entertainment to welcome delegates from around the world.

The event will kick off with a traditional welcome to country from Australia’s First People with an Aboriginal smoking ceremony, dance and music performances to promote the rich cultural heritage of the host country, Australia. IUCN President Mr Zhang Xinsheng will open the congress with an address followed by respective Australian government and NSW environment ministers.

Mr Luvuyo Mandela will pay tribute to his great grandfather Nelson Mandela, patron of the last IUCN World Parks Congress in South Africa. The ceremony will also include a handover of the Congress to the Australian hosts and an introduction to the Congress patrons and champions.

Through a spectacular live and audio visual performance, delegates will also see a showcase of some of the unique and precious natural areas from across the world and be reminded just how critical they are to our planet, our health and our survival.

Are cameras allowed during the Ceremonies?

Camera are allowed during some segments of the opening ceremonies. Camera flashes are extremely dangerous, potentially blinding hazard to the aerial artist. Please do not use camera during the performances.

Welcome Cocktail Reception 

Location: Hall 5 and outdoor area
Date: Wednesday 12 November 2014
Time: 19:00-21:00

Don’t miss the welcome cocktail reception following the Opening Ceremony. You’ll be entertained by live music from Aboriginal artist Dave Dow and his big band and taste some of Australia’s local produce. This function will provide networking opportunities for delegates and create a unique atmosphere of energy and excitement, setting the scene for a successful congress.

Closing Ceremony

The Closing Ceremony will mark the end of the IUCN World Parks Congress 2014 and provide an opportunity for all WPC participants to gather for the last time and celebrate the work accomplished during the congress.

The event will wrap up on the legacy of the IUCN World Parks Congress 2014 and farewell delegates from around the world with a music performance.
