President of Gabon and Patron of the IUCN World Parks Congress 2014

H.E. Ali Bongo Ondimba, President of Gabon, entered politics in 1981. He was Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1989 to 1991, and elected member of the National Assembly. He then served as Minister of Defence from 1999 to 2009. In July 2009 he was appointed official candidate of the Gabonese Democratic Party (PDG) to run for presidential election following the death of the head of State. He was elected President of the Republic of Gabon in August 2009. Since taking office, he has launched several major economic and infrastructure projects and a series of administrative and political reforms with the aim of making Gabon an emerging country.

More recently, President Bongo Ondimba has led several African leaders’ initiatives aimed at curbing illegal wildlife crime and protecting vast areas of African land.

President Bongo Ondimba is married to Sylvia Bongo Ondimba, and has four children.
