CEO, Northern Land Council, Australia

Joe Morrison has lived and worked in northern Australia all his life. He has Dagoman and Mualgal Indigenous heritage as well as ancestry from Scotland.

He has worked with Indigenous people in community development, natural and cultural resource management, planning and advocacy around Indigenous rights to country as Australia’s first peoples for 25 years across northern Australia.

He spent many years advocating for support and resources to underpin Indigenous land and sea management. This led to the Australian Government committing to substantial investment into community-based ‘ranger’ and Indigenous Protected Area Programmes. These programmes support hundreds of remotely located Indigenous people to care for their country across Australia.

Mr Morrison is currently the Chief Executive Officer of the Northern Land Council, the largest statutory Land Council in Australia, covering the Top End of the Northern Territory with an Indigenous population of over 36,000 people living in over 200 settlements.

Mr Morrison has strong research and policy interests in Indigenous land and water rights, climate change, carbon, economic development, marine management and planning, data capture, Intellectual Property, Indigenous Knowledge, and community development.
