The Hon Uahekua Herunga
Minister of Environment and Tourism, Namibia
The Hon Uahekua Herunga was a regional coordinator for his party in the north-western Kunene Region prior to his appointment to the 5th National Assembly of Namibia in 2009. He was subsequently appointed Deputy Minister of Environment and Tourism, and then promoted to Minister of Environment and Tourism in 2012. Earlier this year, he co-hosted and participated in a High Level Dialogue on Improving Protected Area Governance for Livelihood Security and Biodiversity in Southern Africa in Namibia. The dialogue confirmed that protected areas can and do contribute to both improved livelihoods and improved conservation, but raised concerns about biodiversity loss across the Southern African region. The participants concluded that a new regional strategy for protected areas was urgently needed.
