Co-organized by IUCN and the French Marine Protected Areas Agency, the 3rd International Marine Protected Areas Congress (IMPAC3) was held in Marseille and Ajaccio, France from 21-27 October 2013. IMPAC3 gathered over 1,200 of marine specialists and ministers from around the world to evaluate the progress made so far and propose new solutions for the conservation and sustainable development of the oceans.
Around 500 participants from Asia and beyond gathered in Sendai city, Japan, from 13-17 November 2013 to address the challenges facing Asia’s protected areas - national parks, wilderness areas, nature reserves and so on - and to chart a course for their future. Convened by IUCN and the Ministry of Environment of Japan, the First Asia Parks Congress showed how important protected areas are to addressing global challenges including climate change, biodiversity loss, sustainable development, and reducing the risk of disasters.
Held in San José, Costa Rica from 18-21 March 2014, the IV Mesoamerican Parks Congress was organized in the framework of the Central American Commission on Environment and Development (CCAD). The Congress focused on protected areas governance and knowledge management aspects in protected areas, as well as further development and effective management of marine and terrestrial protected areas in the Mesoamerican region.
