Cross-cutting theme - New Social Compact

Gough and Inaccessible Islands, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland

One of the outcomes of the IUCN World Parks Congress 2014 was the elaboration of a New Social Compact, through which principles and actions to change human behaviour, shift political will and define a new approach to achieve successfully and socially just conservation will be articulated., During the stream sessions, dialogues were facilitated by the New Social Compact team to examine and respond to the key lessons, opportunities and threats being articulated by the streams. The dialogue participants were gathered from diverse global constituencies, including protected areas staff, policy makers, Indigenous Peoples, artisanal fishers, scientists, philanthropists, religious leaders, media and other specialists, rights-holders and stakeholders. The dialogues represented this diverse global community. With professional facilitation, the participants identified the main issues to be fed into the New Social Compact to sustain the planet and its finite resources.
